M.M.ROE

I had the pleasure and honor to have known Maggie Roe and to have called her my friend. Maggie passed away away a few years ago, but her memory and spirit live on in me everyday. I surround myself with her creations. I never pack her jewelry away, it is in view all the time when i am not wearing it. Lately i also find that it has brought me a great source of comfort. Maybe because it takes me back to a happy place in time, of being out in the beautiful and spiritual spaces of Washington. Or maybe it is because there is part of Maggie's spirit in every thing she made. Maggie's jewelry is made from fossilized walrus ivory, trade beads and various bits and pieces of nature's gifts that she would find during her hikes on the beaches of Wa. These pieces are either carved or scrimshawed (or sometimes both). I have also pictured some of her carved rocks and the eagle is carved from found beached whale bone. Maggie was also a wonderful artist and did paintings and drawings. I will feature her artwork in my next post. Maggie's art helps to make my home a cozy place to be...............................

wow, these pieces are just amazing! i love them all. i am so glad you have them out and that they remind you of such a happy time. my little sister used to make such amazing collars, necklaces, earrings and even whole breast plates from bone and beads in the native american tradition when she was in college. she followed these complex diagrams she would sketch out on graph paper after studying native american pieces forever. i couldn't do it! i am lucky to still have some of her pieces. where she went to college there were many native american bead shops and people around to help her and to admire and buy her work. now she has given all of this up for her career and wears only pearls or silver chains which i understand, but i so miss these pieces which just were so beautiful and so complicated(i tried to make one once and my eyes crossed!). i am still in awe of them. i hope that someday she can come back to them. these pieces are so "you".

thanks, i do love these pieces very much and have really fond memories wearing them in places like the rain forrest and at the ocean. they still have some good vibes! the things that your sis made sounds really cool. that would be neat if she got into that stuff again.

Hello, I found this page when I "googled" M.M. Roe. I have 3 necklaces that I bought when she was selling her work on ebay. I spent so much time looking at her work - it really touches the soul. I wear the necklaces all the time - and like you - keep them out where I can see them. I didn't know Maggie - except through email correspondence - but I felt bereft when I learned that she had died. She is missed. Thank you for this beautiful tribute. Tamar Resnick
